Until 1988, there was no separate professional body in Sri Lanka to represent Automobile Engineers. Most of the personnel engaged in the field of automobile engineering had to obtain membership from Institute of Road Transport Engineers – UK, Institute of the Motor Industry UK, Society of Automotive Engineers – the US etc. At this time, a group of eminent Engineers namely Mr Shelly Wickramasinghe, Mr B D Y Senevirathne, Mr Ananda Dullewa, Mr A C M Shafeek, Mr S M Rathnaweera and Lt Col P C Pathiraja felt the necessity of setting up a body to foster and regulate the activities of the automobile engineering professionals in the country and to achieve higher professional levels in the lines of similar Institutions such as IRTE, IMI, SAE, etc.
he conveners of IAE-SL had a couple of meetings in the latter part of 1987 at the premises of Corps of Electricals & Mechanical Engineers – Sri Lanka Army and the biggest task of these six gentlemen was to get the others involved to form an Institute of our own. First, they targeted their own batch-mates who did studies with them in universities I technical colleges and then the known persons involved with the industry. A request letter was circulated to all those known persons involved with automotive engineering and as a result, they were able to gather a sufficient number to form an Institute which was given the name as ‘The Institute of Automotive Engineers of Sri Lanka’.
The draft Constitution of the Institute was drawn up by a Sub Committee consisting of Mr. AC M Shafeek and Mr. S M Rathnaweera and was unanimously accepted at Special General Meeting held on 09 April 1988. At the same meeting, it was decided to appoint a Patron and two Vice Patrons and accordingly, Hon. M.H. Mohamed MP, Minister of Transport, Transport Boards & Muslim Affairs was unanimously accepted as the First Patron and Mr. Senaka Amarasinghe, Vice Chairman – M/S Car-Mart Group and Mr. Chula De Soysa, Chairman -M/S Associated Motorways were accepted as First Vice Patrons.
