Beira Lake

Beira Lake is a lake situated in the center of Colombo city. The lake is encircled by numerous high-end businesses in the city. In 1521 Portuguese built this beautiful Beira Lake as a protective barrier against invaders, and to serve as a medium to transport weapons and soldiers in the event of invasion or conflict.

The present Beira Lake is re deloped by the government of Sri Lanka. The government removed the slums around the lake and moved the people to various government housing schemes; cleaned the lake, made good roads and now lots of skyscrapers and high-end businesses are popping up around the lake which makes the lake area one of the best tourist attractions in Colombo city.

Beira Lake is a place for beauty and relaxation that situated within the city limits. Due to its pollution, Beira Lake has crazy green coloured water. There is a small island in the middle of the lake that holding the Simamalaka Shrine. The lake attaches with other lakes via tiny canals and ends up into the Indian Ocean. The lake is a nice and peaceful place to sit down and have a sightseeing break or do some water activities like duck paddle boating. Altogether Beira Lake gives you a much-needed nature break in bustling city life.
