Dr. Uragoda has recounted about National Hospital of Sri Lanka in his book. According to his account, During the duration Sir Henry Wards governorship (1855-1860), the General Hospital was started with 3000 pounds sterling being earmarked for the project. The government policy had been to contribute to natively-run charitable health organizations. However, after the introduction of the General Hospital, its policy was forgotten. The capacity to hold and treat the patients was very low. So, General Hospital also succeeded with the Pettah Hospital. Accordingly, the General Hospital was opened in Longden Place in 1864, under the inaugural administration of Chief Civil Medical Officer Dr. Parsley.
The hospital is located in Colombo with a 32-acre block of land which is the largest teaching institution hospital in Sri Lanka and the final referral center in the country consists of over 3000 beds. The hospital also acts as training center for undergraduates and postgraduate trainees of the Medicine Faculty. The nursing training school, Colombo, PBS, and Schools of Radiography, Pharmacy, Cardiograph, physiotherapy and occupational therapy are also affiliated with the National Hospital.
The building of National Hospital of Sri Lanka was not available in a very populous area. Coming from the north-side, there was a shady, narrow avenue behind the mansions, a Titchbourne Hall and The Gutharium. From the side of the east, there was a look-alike avenue running from the Welikada Prison. Among the houses are built there were also two undertakers business introductions. From the western-side direction, coming from Turret Road, there stood a small house known as The Mango Lodge, where the Eye Hospital stands now.
