The purpose of Good Market is to support an emerging new economy that is good for people and good for the planet. Good Market operates as a self-financing social enterprise. It is brought to life by an amazing community of vendors, partners, and supporters. A small team handles day-to-day operations and provides community support.
Good Market started as a volunteer-driven initiative. Sri Lanka has many organic farmers, fair trade initiatives, social enterprises, and responsible businesses. It also has well-educated consumers that want healthy food and socially and environmentally responsible products. The idea was to have a small weekly marketplace to bring these groups together. From the beginning, the market was curated. In order to participate, vendors had to be “good for people and good for the planet” and meet minimum sector standards.
Because of past experiences with donor-funded aid projects, the co-founders were committed to starting without external funding. They mobilized a network of interested consumers and social entrepreneurs, and everyone volunteered their time to help find a venue, identify potential vendors, review applications, and spread the word. Vendors pre-paid for their stalls, and these funds were used to cover venue costs and all event logistics. The response exceeded expectations. The plan was to have 10 to 15 vendors, but the weekly event started in 2012 with 33 stalls, and it rapidly expanded from there.
